The Best Internships For 20142014年最佳实习岗位
BP America’s 12-week summer program work on projects to develop pipelines and help create ways to harness alternative energy. They explore new energy reserves and try to develop clean fuels and other products like bio-based engine oil. If they work in the company’s business or legal office, they participate in crucial decision-making. BP interns get so much hands-on experience, more than 50% wind up receiving full-time job offers after graduating from college. “We look at them as permanent employees, even though they’re interns, ” says Aimee Close, head of university relations projects and programs. Interns also get mentors, or “buddies, ” who are recent college grads working full-time at the company.

BP’s internships are not embroiled in the controversy over unpaid, exploited labor. They are well-paid (though Close won’t reveal figures). They also enjoy benefits like healthcare coverage, short-term disability benefits and even a savings plan where the company matches as much as 7% of employees’ contributions. In the more than 20 cities where BP has offices, interns are entitled to free, fully-furnished housing. In addition, they get other perks, like baseball, soccer and movie preview tickets, plus free lunch-and-learn sessions.

This is the first year that BP America’s combination of meaningful work experience, pay, perks and career opportunities land it in the No. 1 slot on a list of the nation’s top internships, put out by career website Vault.com. It may seem that November is an odd time to release an internship list, but in fact, the deadline for BP’s summer 2014 internship applications has already passed. It ran from Aug. 1 to Nov. 1. But the company also runs a 6-month co-op program for college students seeking work experience during the school year. The next deadline, May 1, is for co-ops that start in September.

Vault has been publishing an annual internship directory since 1993.What used to be available in hard copy is all online now. Click here for Vault’s internships portal. See our slideshow for the top ten.

To compile the list of the top ten, Vault sent surveys to 500 of the 1, 000 programs in its directory. This year, 140 companies responded. Vault also collected surveys from some 7, 700 interns. It only evaluated programs where at least 10 interns returned questionnaires. Roughly 100 internships made that cut.

Though there are many more than 100 internships in the world, and Vault didn’t get responses from some of the companies where we know the internships are stellar, like Google
Google, Microsoft
Microsoft and Qualcomm
Qualcomm, we think that the top programs Vault picked are all great ones worth considering.
Vault asked interns to rate their experience, on a scale of 1-10, in five areas: quality of life, compensation and benefits, interview process, career development and full-time employment prospects.

The No. 2 program on Vault’s list: Bain & Company’s Summer Associate and Associate Consultant Internship. Bain runs 10-week programs for both undergraduates and MBA students. At the outset of both programs, the company hosts a three-day training session staffed by managers and partners from around the world. The college interns train in Bain’s local offices while the company flies business students in from its 50 far-flung locations, including Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg. They all meet in Brewster on Cape Cod where they spend three days learning skills like market analysis and competitor analysis.

Both college and MBA interns work on what Keith Bevans, Bain’s head of global consultant recruiting, describes as “live cases.” That means interns do real work for real clients, shoulder to shoulder with full-fledged Bain consultants. All interns work with mentors assigned to them at the beginning of the summer and they have a direct supervisor or a manager who keeps close tabs on them throughout the season. Bain wants interns to build strong relationships with colleagues. “We want them to really feel like they’re part of the firm, ” says Bevans. Bain’s goal: To hire 100% of its interns, both MBAs and college grads, as soon as they’re done with school. Bain internships are very well paid. Bevans wouldn’t reveal a number but according to a listing on salary ranking website Glassdoor, Bain MBA interns earn between $10, 000 and $12, 000 a month.

Another great internship that’s landed on Vault’s list for the fourth year in a row, this time in tenth place: The Capital Fellows Program based in Sacramento, Calif., run by California State University, Sacramento. Technically the program is a fellowship, rather than an internship, says outreach program director Claire Bunch, because participants have to have finished their bachelor’s degrees before they start. The 64 fellows, divided between the state Assembly, Senate, Judiciary and the executive branch, do substantive work: They help draft legislation, write speeches and conduct policy briefings. Steeped in the work of real-life policymaking, roughly half get offered full-time jobs in California state government when they finish the program, which starts in October and runs 10-11 months. They get paid a stipend of $1, 972 a month and receive six units of graduate-level academic credit in government or public policy. Another perk: health insurance that includes vision and dental benefits. The next deadline to apply, for the academic year that starts Oct. 2014, is Feb. 10.

The Hottest Trends In Eyewear For 20142014年最热门的眼镜流行趋势
Whether you sport geeky chic opticals or oversized aviators, you’re advocating eyewear trends – perhaps unknowingly. True, glasses help us to see, and protect our precious eyes from the sun’s glare. But most importantly, they are everyone’s favorite accessory.

This week, fashion forecaster Stylesight hosted its annual Eyewear Product & Trend Review for spring/summer 2014. The event featured a wide range of imaginative new optical and sunglass products from designers across the globe. There are four major trends to watch for in the coming months. Here’s the rundown:

The Instagram Look
1.Instagram风格

This style, inspired by the latest craze in social media, has a 1970s appeal. For sunwear, rosy tinted lenses from O’Neill (Driftwood), SPY (Bleeker) and Ferragamo (SF691SL) give wearers a filtered view of the world. Similarly, Carerra (82S), Maui Jim (H287), and Lanvin (SLN586) offer products with gold-tinted lenses, which make for a sepia-like effect.

In both optical and sunwear, materials and silhouettes are reminiscent of yesteryear too. O’Neill offers shades with understated wooden frames, while tortoise print makes a comeback with designs from Original Penguin (The Pinner), Robert Graham (Princeton), Max Studio (122) and Karl Lagerfeld (KL809S). Soft, bubbly shapes from Judith Leiber (JL1674) and Icon Eyewear (30310) round out these throwback designs.

The Mathematical Look

This trend is most concerned with angular cuts and neutral colors. Marni’s triangular lenses and Chloe’s (CE638SL) hexagonal ones emphasize geometric shapes. Prada (PR09QS), Optic Nerve (Kincaid) and Emporio Armani (EA4021) place high emphasis on the brow bar. Designs by Balmain (BL1018) have an industrial appeal, with simplistic contours.

XOXO (Aspire), Frost (Fizzy) and Roberto Cavalli (RC797S) use arithmetical frame prints to make statements. Black and white patterns bring stunning sophistication to designs from Face A Face (Artie2), Jimmy Crystal (JCS601) and Randy Jackson (RJ3016) – yes, that Randy Jackson. Matte finishes from Lotho and Dsquared2 (DQ0134) drive home the point that a lack of shine does not mean a lack of elegance.

The Aquatic Look

Inspired by the ocean, this trend features vibrant blues, turquoises and teals. Frames from Vera Wang (Asuka), Icon Eyewear (75364), Kaenon (602) and Michael Stars (Iconic Stylist) draw upon these watery hues. Designers such as Scott Harris (V-25) and Prodesign (4134) pioneer the floating lens effect, using partially clear frames and minimalism. Cloudy sea glass-textured frames from Superdry (Comets), Vera Wang (Chrysanthe), and Corrine McCormack (Zooey) bring the oceanic look home.

The Garden Look

In the fourth and final look for the upcoming season, earthy greens and vibrant pinks, demonstrated by Valentino (V681S) and Mui Mui (VMU07M), are evocative of spring foliage. Dolce & Gabbana (DG4190), Jonathan Paul (Ikara) and Lafont (Naiade) offer new floral prints too. House of Holland and Robert Graham (Calvin) push the fantasy look to an extreme with saturated, mirrored lenses.

Products by Frost (Papillon) and Lafont (Nec Plus Ultra) feature whimsical butterfly-shaped silhouettes. Floral embellishments from designers like Caviar (5594) make this look dazzlingly exotic. In the spirit of modernism, Cinzia Designs (Twinkle), Alexander McQueen, (AMQ4239S) Kate Spade and others, adorn their frames with sparkles and studs.

Dear Annie: I work at the headquarters of a Fortune 500 company in a major city. The suburb where I live is not that far away as the crow flies, but the horrendous traffic (even in the predawn hours) means my commute often takes more than an hour each way, and it is a huge drain on my energy. Then, when I get to work, my day is so full of stupid little interruptions that it's hard to focus on one thing long enough to finish it.

For both of these reasons, I would be a lot more productive if I worked from home at least a couple of days a week -- no commute, no distractions. The problem is my boss. When I have approached him about this, he always says, "If I can't see you, how do I know you're working?" He says it jokingly, but actually I think he means it. Also, he has brought up the fact that Yahoo (YHOO), Best Buy (BBY), and HP (HPQ) have limited or banned telecommuting, and expressed concerns about data security if people are working from home. Any ideas about how to persuade him to let us try it anyway? -- Roadblocked

Dear Roadblocked: Next time your boss brings up Yahoo, Best Buy, and HP as paragons of policy, says David Heinemeier Hansson, you might point out that "all three are in trouble, so they need all hands on deck. Why would any company want to join that club?"

Far more relevant is that telework has quietly become the rule, rather than the exception. According to a survey this past July by HR trade group WorldatWork, 88% of U.S. companies now allow or encourage telecommuting. Some, like IBM (IBM), insist that most of their people work remotely most of the time. In a new book, Remote: Office Not Required, Hansson cites a white paper from Big Blue that estimates telecommuting has saved the company more than $100 million in real estate costs.

Remote is packed with other compelling reasons for telecommuting's rise. Cutting out commutes is better for the ozone layer than having millions of people sitting in traffic jams, spewing carbon monoxide, for hours on end. It allows companies to source top talent from anywhere in the country or the world, without regard for how much face time they can put in at the office.

Working from home or on the road, at least some of the time, also tends to make people more productive. Hansson agrees with you that "the modern office has become an interruption factory, and interruptions are not free. There is a cost in productivity to constantly demanding people's attention immediately for little things that are not really urgent," he says. "People who can't concentrate for more than a few minutes at a time are almost certainly not doing their best work."

Hansson offers three suggestions for winning over your reluctant boss. First, the idea that you'd be able to get more work done, and do it better, without distractions (and without the wearying commute) makes a good starting point for the discussion. "Don't frame it as a request for a perk, as if this is a favor you're asking the company to do for you," Hansson says. "Instead, emphasize how much better it will be for the team and the company if you are able to work without interruptions. Having you at your most productive benefits the boss at least as much as it benefits you."
Second, "you'll need to address his concern about data security," Hansson notes. "But data is not necessarily secure just because people are working in an office together. Employees take laptops home, they carry company data in their personal smartphones, they go on business trips. If there are security gaps the company needs to address, that is a serious issue whether you are working at home or not." Before bringing up telecommuting with your boss again, ask your in-house techies for help in hack-proofing the devices you plan to use.

And third, Hansson suggests enlisting more of your colleagues to the cause. "Trying out telecommuting with just one or two people is doomed to fail, because that one person, or two people, will become too isolated from the group," he says. "A better way is to have all the people on your team work remotely some of the time, so everyone gets a taste of it, and no one is the 'odd man out' who's always calling in on the conference line at meetings." At some companies, he adds, teams or departments start with "work-at-home Wednesdays," so everyone gets at least one distraction-free day per week.

The hardest argument to counter is, "If I can't see you, how do I know you're working?" Says Hansson, "It reflects a deep-seated fear of losing control. Fighting that requires that you go slowly and start small -- 'I worked from home on Tuesday and look at all the great stuff I got done' -- and then gradually increase the amount of time you telecommute."

Hansson says that at his company, Chicago-based collaboration software maker 37signals, where most of the staff works remotely, "the biggest problem we have had is not people goofing off while working at home, but people overworking.
